7 Simple Ways to Make Your Home Feel More Summer-y Featured Image

With warmer temperatures finally here, you may be dreaming of the beach and taking a long and well-deserved vacation with your family – but what about the rest of the summer when you’re at home? You can keep the summer feel close at hand with a few easy decorating tips that aren’t going to cost an arm and a leg to implement.

Many decor magazines make suggestions that fall just a bit short of what a normal person would do. After all, it’s hardly “easy” if you have to spend the entire season changing out complicated decor. These tips will help you bring summer into your home with a few quick and simple changes. Check them out and try the ones you like.

1. Use Leafy Greens

Fresh flowers are great, but they don’t last very long. You don’t want to have to swap out flowers each week. Leafy green plants last much longer and give a sort of tropical vibe to your home. You can also use faux plants. The trick to making them look and feel real is to put some water in the vase; it tricks people into believing they’re real and completes the look in a great way! Just make sure to give them a wipe regularly to remove any dust and no one will ever know the difference.

2. Bring Home the Beach

It seems simple, but a small basket or jar filled with seashells can be the perfect summer decoration for your mantle. Nothing says summer quite like shells do!

Nautical decor is also a great choice. For your dining area, navy and white napkins or even dishware can bring summer straight into your home from the outside. The colours possess a certain undeniable beach-like quality. On top of that, it’s a great way to remind yourself of an upcoming beach trip or family vacation.

3. Open the Doors

Assuming there aren’t too many pests around, a great way to bring summer into your home is to open the doors and windows and set up an oscillating fan. Natural sunlight and the sound of the outdoors is what summer is all about, so even if you’re inside taking care of day-to-day chores, it can be relaxing to hear the world around you. It might even work as an incentive for you to work faster so you can go join in the fun.

4. Make it Fruity

Summer is the time you think of fruit smoothies, ice cream, and barbecues. Set out a basket filled with peaches and other summer fruits. Unlike flowers, fruit works as decor since you’re likely going to eat them before they go bad. Just be sure replace the ones you’ve eaten with more and you’ll have a constantly rotating, delicious decoration.

5. Treat Your Treatments

If you’re willing to put in a bit of extra effort, swapping out your heavier curtains for lighter, linen fabrics is a great way to change up your summer decor. Flowing, thin curtains allow more light into the home while still providing the privacy you desire. They also give a summer look that just can’t be beaten. There’s something about how the light gauzy curtains blends outdoor and indoor in a seamless way that makes your home and yard feel connected.

6. Create a “Summer Station”

Set aside an area of your home for your “summer station”. This can be a spot on your kitchen counter, a small table or a shelf by the door. Put out a basket filled with sunscreen, water, and other items that remind you of the season. It can be a gathering place for your family to make sure they have what they need to stay safe while outdoors. A cooler filled with ice and a few choice drinks can make that part of the home a favourite for your kids when they come in from playing outside, and will also help them to remember to put on sunscreen before they go back out.

7. Use Candles

In the fall and winter, your home has a very unique scent it doesn’t have any other time of year, but people just don’t put the same emphasis on smell during summer. Change it up and set out a candle that reminds you of the summer season. Honeysuckle, lavender, peaches, and other light, citrus-like smells are all great choices.

Your summer decorating doesn’t have to involve a complete renovation of your home. In fact, it shouldn’t! Decorating for the summer should reflect how you want to spend the season – relaxed, casual, and easy, but with enough energy and activity to bring a smile to your face each time you walk into your home.
